History

The project started in 2020, the idea was indeed to produce locally with the possibility to have a national high-quality
product that can have a strong impact on the image of the country. We wanted first to sell a quality rum to the Congolese and then to reach an international market where Central African rum is non-existent.

For the success of this project, we teamed up with Alexandre Vingtier, a world-renowned spirits consultant. For Alex, the project was a new discovery, as he was unfamiliar with the existence or extent of a distillery in the Congo called Kwilu and especially the historical dimension it had.

The project was rooted in the desire to value society, and the national company, to promote the made-in-DRC brand, and to embrace Planet Kwilu’s values.

Ingredients

Are these the ingredients for the rum itself?

Production

In the case of Kwilu Rhum:
Step 1: Molasses – We first dilute the molasses with water, as it is too concentrated in sugar to be fermented.
Step 2: Fermentation – We then add yeast (halal & kosher certified) to obtain the alcoholic drink. The fermentation process is the transformation of sugar into alcohol and aroma. It also produces carbon dioxide that can be collected.

Step 3: Distillation – The distillation columns usually consist of two or four columns, each one feeding the next. The process has different levels of concentration, through which the steam circulates. This technique enables the rum’s aromatic profile to be monitored and controlled.

Step 4: Aging – The rum is then matured with the highest quality oak chips to obtain the amber color and notes of vanilla, caramel, and cinnamon.
